Cyclone brings Cowboys match forward

The NRL has brought forward Saturday night's clash between North Queensland and Penrith by two hours due to the threat of Cyclone Ului.

The kick-off time for the match has been moved forward from 9.30pm (AEDT) to 7.30pm.

The start time was changed following Friday afternoon talks between the NRL, local authorities, the two competing clubs and match broadcaster Fox Sports.

The cyclone has been downgraded to cyclone two and is expected to cross the coast, just north of Townsville near Yeppoon, late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

"We have been advised that the cyclone in the region is not expected to directly impact on the match, but it is in the best interests of all involved to play the game as early as possible before the worst of the conditions occur," NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said.

"We will continue to monitor the situation with authorities to ensure all safety precautions are taken for players, officials and fans."

Cowboys executive director Peter Parr said it was a common sense move by all parties.

"The longer Saturday night goes, the poorer the weather will be," he said.

"So what we've tried to do is get the game on as early as we possibly can suiting Penrith, suiting the under-20 game, suiting the broadcasters, so hopefully by bringing it forward two hours we won't have stadium staff still working out there till after midnight."
