The St George Illawarra Dragons NYC Team were tonight defeated 24-18 by the Eels at Parramatta Stadium.

It was a flying start for the home team racing away to lead 18-0 at half time through tries to centre Rory Brien in the 5th minute, winger Brad Graham in the 9th minute, halfback Dan Cross in the 14th minute through good ball movement and weight of possession off the back of Dragons penalties.

Fullback Jaydin Tavita successfully converted all three tries in the opening stanza in a dream start for the home team.

The Eels were also the first to score in the second half, making it 24 nil in the 44th minute through hooker Daniel Galati.

It wasn’t until the 55th minute when the Dragons kicked into gear sparked by interchange player David Catteral who made a strong run from 10m out and carried two Eels defenders over the line with him to score the Dragons first try of the year.

Five-eight Kane Gillies set up the second try in the 68th minute, breaking the Eels line and racing 60m down field before passing right to winger Kalifa Fai Fai Loa who scored in the right hand corner.

Centre Travis Roche dived on a grubber in the final minute and with fullback Chris Astill successful with all three conversations, it brought the Dragons to within a converted try but it was all too late, the Eels winning the opening clash of the season 24-18 thanks to four tries, three conversions and penalty goal to fullback Jaydin Tavita.

“It was a pretty tough and fast opening game,” said Dragons NYC Rookie Winger Simon Maslanka. “Our first half was not the best, but we tightened things up and improved our speed around the ruck which was important”.
