UK to host 2013 World Cup

Quote:

The RLIF has today confirmed that the next World Cup will be held in the United Kingdom in 2013. Along with the announcement, a two day meeting was held to determine the International calendar and to discuss the allocation of funding to aid the game as a whole.

The 2008 Rugby League World Cup was an outstanding success by any measure, attracting more than 290,000 fans, 6791 tickets sold through official travel agents and attracting a global television audience of 19.2m people.

I’m probably going to get slaughtered for this, but I think that the competition should have gone to either NZ or AUS, with the 2017 competition being held in Europe.

The comp hasn’t fully recovered from the beating it took in 2000 imo, and a wipe-out of the Euro Nations similar to what we saw in 2008, probably won’t enhance the sports credibility in the UK and Europe.

I have never been in favour of the splitting of the GB team at the Elite level, but I would like more time for the development of players via the Four Nations (and the Pacific Cup in Australasia) as well as a workable resolution to the international eligibility laws.

However, if we are going to hold it over here then let’s do it properly: suspend the elite domestic leagues for a month and hold it in either May, June or July and get it on FTA Television.

Hopefully this time round the television people make a better job of it than they did in 2008, then maybe the TV audience would be even better.
19 million isn't a lot when you consider that there are 6 billion people in the world.

I wonder how the Poms will react to being belted on their own grounds?? they sucked enough after last years hammering by Australia & New Zealand, and nearly Papua & New Guinea.....I do really wish they would accept the facts that the game is slipping away from them regarding skill levels, there isn't a great deal of pleasure watching the tripe they put in font of the public these days....I really look forward to watching Australia v New Zealand these days. #@$$# @#$#%$

Anyone else feeling underwhelmed by the WC announcement?
The RFL website now has a statement from the PM, tho he probably thought it was union he was bigging up:
RFL Website

Welcoming the news, the Prime Minister said: “It really is a great opportunity to inspire a generation of young people to play the game and together with Sport England’s £30million support for grassroots rugby, the sport has some exciting years to look forward to.
Source: RFL Website, clicky
The RLIF doesnt appear to have a website, though one is promised in April 2009 apparently.. &^%*
RLIF Website (sort of..)
Rugby League marketing and PR at its finest! Still, I bet Singapore was nice at this time of year. I am glad that a different sport hasnt made a similar decision because I'd hate for the two to be compared.[redit]add rlif website link and hopefully shame them into sorting it![/redit]

Very..
The last world cup didn't go all that well in my opinion, and i can't see one being held in england being much different unless a lot of work is done to promote the game there in the meantime.

This move will undoubtedly weaken England even further so we will have four "alsorans"for the Oceana teams to flog,...yippee.

Easy there tiger, I agree with ya, in the short term anyway.
Personally, I would of prefered the Great Britain team to be the elite side, with a seperate mid-season comp involving the home nations plus France. We could of called it the five nations and used it in part, as a selection method for the GB Lions. If I remember rightly, it was the various sports funding quango's who insisted that development funding was dependant on the break up..

I heard through other forums the Lions tours will be back on. But they will be treated with the respect it deserves ala Union. Like every 4 years.

I for one actually like the fact we get to see the likes of the Dragonhearts, Wolfhounds, Bravehearts, and Lionhearts as seperate entities.
Watch this space with the performances of the Dragonhearts at the underage level Wales could be pushing into the top 4. Not to mention the Wolfhounds performance at the last world cup. Scotland to is starting to perform at European Cup level.
